Hot roller derby action, a comedy variety show, City Weekly Music Awards, and so much more. It’s happening around Salt Lake (the SL,UT) and it’s all right here in the people’s guide to SLC.

This week:

Tonight kicks off the CWMA shows. Be sure to attend and vote for your favorite bands. Check out the full schedule, and get a taste of each band here. These are some of our best in local music, and they need our support. Shows are only $6, and worth so much more than that.

February 5 roller derby boutWasatch Roller Derby is getting the derby season kicked off Saturday night with a home bout between The Black Diamond Divas and The Hot Wheelers. Bout begins at 7pm at the Salt Palace, tickets are $13 at the door.

Saturday night is a night of laughs and debauchery, Hodgepodge with Blake Bard will be a variety show of stand-up comedy, live music, and burlesque. The always-funny Blake Bard, Christopher Stephenson, and Levi Rounds will be providing laughs, along with improv, Rev. Mayhem, and performers from the Voodoo Darlings. At The Complex, 2/5, 7:30pm. Only $10.

Throwing a Super Bowl party, and have a signature treat you like to cook? You should submit that recipe to the Real Salt Lake cooking contest. They’re taking entries through February 15, and the winner will have their new concession item named for them, available all season. Winner will also receive a 10 ticket flex pack.

“Enlighten us, but make it quick” is the slogan of Ignite–a community event celebrating the passion and creativity of geek culture. Ignite Salt Lake is Thursday, Feb 10. It is a fun, informative, and frequently silly event with several local speakers presenting what they’re passionate about in a quick, non-selling environment. (6:30pm free).

Coming up:

Feb 19 is Hockey Weekend in America, and everyone should celebrate by joining the WWJDinSLC crew at Utah Grizzlies vs. Las Vegas Wranglers. RSVP on Facebook, and we will get the best possible price. Great beer, fast-action, fights, learn a bit about hockey and meet new people.

Thursday, Feb 24, is an all-Seinfeld themed quiz. $5 per player entry goes into the pot, and first place takes home a cash prize of at least $200. Get more info here.

Legendary 80s band, Orchestral Movements in the Dark (OMD) is back together with the original lineup, and selling out shows across America. See them March 23 at The Depot, where they will play songs from their new album, as well as classics like “If You Leave” and “So In Love.” (tickets are $20 through SmithsTix.)
