This is the place for all your upcoming essential entertainment events in Salt Lake, UT. Welcome to a shiny new edition of Around the SL,UT. The best in theatre, music, and drinking are all right here.

Sugar Space is presenting a Night at the Casbah Saturday, January 15. From belly dancers to gypsy-punk fusion music, this will be a night of middle-eastern themed entertainment as well as time for you to join on the dance floor.

Make plans now for Family Night Monday with the Utah Grizzlies, when Utah hosts Stockton at 7pm. Kids under 12 will be admitted free and there will be $1 food specials all night. (2 free kids per paying adult.) Tickets start from $9.

See the premier of the film Tailgate Alaska, a snowboarding film with riders from around the world from Olympic champions to recreational riders. Afterwards, Salem takes the stage with their unique blend of jazz/hip-hop/soul sound. (8pm $15).

Join the Happy Hour 801 club at Frida Bistro Thursday, January 20. It’s a no-membership, no sales presentation, networking group to meet people. There is a $5 cover, and Frida Bistro is offering $5 mimosas and food specials for those who come. 6-9pm. Of course, if you slip out early with some of your new friends, you can head to Lumpy’s Downtown for a free pub quiz at 8pm. Prizes, free drinks, & more up for grabs.

Music:

Friday night, cool psychedelic/rock bands Red Dog Revival, Fox Van Cleef, and Nathan Spenser & The Low Keys at Bar Deluxe (8pm $5). Guster at In The Venue Saturday (8pm $30). Tuesday, Psychedelic: VonVeederVeld, Spell Talk, Dirty Blonde at Urban Lounge (9pm). Wednesday, Conscious Divine, General Harrison, Montreal Blue at Liquid Joe’s 10pm $5. SLAJO (SL Alternative Jazz Orchestra) CD release party at Bar Deluxe Thursday (8pm $5).

Speaking of music, the City Weekly Music Awards are coming in February. There are band showcases each weekend, leading up to the finals on February 19. See the best local bands, and vote for your favorites. This is no small-town competition, the 2009 winner was Neon Trees, who are now on stations and touring across the country.

Bands, artists, actors, dancers, and other performance artists, be sure to get your application in for the Utah Arts Fest. Performance arts applications are now being accepted.
