Bruges Waffles and Frites

July 11, 2011

It is exactly as it’s named, waffles and frites (fries). But not just any, the best outside of Belgium. These waffles are incredible on their own without a single topping, but they also offer a number of fresh fruits, cream, ice-cream, Belgian chocolate, and more to tempt you. Order a big cone of frites and you’ll wonder why you’ve settled for average fries for so long.

Atmosphere: Only a couple seats inside, but plenty of sidewalk and rooftop patio seating.

Price: Around $5 for a topped waffle, frites from $3.24 (share them). Giant machine-gun sandwich $9.25.

Drinks: No liquor

What you need to know: If you’re going around meal-time or an event at Pioneer Park, there will likely be a line. Don’t worry, it moves quickly.

Location: 336 west 300 south

Hours: (summer hours) Mon-Thu 9am-8pm. Fri-Sat 9am-10pm. Winter hours: they close an hour early.

Pho Green Papaya

July 11, 2011

There are a lot of choices for pho, but this is the king. The difference is in the broth, which is perfectly seasoned and filled with the best meats and perfectly cooked noodles. In addition to the pho, there are many choices of Vietnamese and Thai dishes. Dinner combos are an incredible amount of food. Fresh spring rolls, garlic string bean, and pork vindaloo are my favorites, after the pho of course. Definitely date-night worthy, but casual enough for a quick hearty meal any time.

Atmosphere: Casual, moderate noise level, very attentive staff.

Price: Most main dishes under $10, giant dinner combos for $14.95.

Drinks: Beer and wine.

What you need to know: Don’t believe the rumors, West Valley is perfectly safe and it is worth the trip to come here. Right off I-215 at the 3500 south exit.

Location: 2000 west 3500 south

Hours: 10:30-9pm. Closed Sunday.

Stoneground

July 11, 2011

Pizza and pasta for the discriminating palate, Stoneground serves great New York style Italian food. Known for their pesto, great salads, tiramisu, and of course the pizza and pasta. Giant servings and dishes that are great to share. Half sandwiches and salads available for lunch time. Carbonara and Stoneground Classic pizza are among my favorites. For something zesty, try the lemon caper linguine. Classy enough for a date, casual enough for a night with the buddies.

Atmosphere: Great view in a classy yet casual setting.

Price: $8-18 for main dishes, pizzas $13-18.

Drinks: Full bar menu

What you need to know: Sunday is all you can eat pizza & salad. Order your drinks and wait to see what comes out of the kitchen.
