This weekend, we’re gonna need a bigger boat.

See Jaws in all its glory of 35mm film on the big screen. Tower Theatre’s Summer of 35mm continues this weekend, with screenings at 11pm Friday and Saturday, and noon Sunday. Tickets are $5, and limited edition movie posters will be on sale.

There’s not just one night a year when everyone’s Irish. This Sunday it’s the Irish Music Festival at Ogden Amphitheater. From 1-9pm, local and touring Irish bands will be taking the stage. Swagger, The Wild Celts, Slaymaker, Heathen Highlanders, and Young Dubliners are among the performers. Tickets are only $15.

Sunday also brings us the debut of the Urban Flea Market at Washington Square. No longer are the days when nothing happens on Sunday, come stroll downtown and check out the local artisans, music, crafts, and animal rescue at the market. Washington Square is located at 400 south 200 east, across from the library, and easy access from TRAX.

Maynard James Keenan is in town with A Perfect Circle, this Monday at Kingsbury Hall. Tickets from $45, show begins at 7:30pm, Aug 1.

Hip hop fans have a couple big shows this week. U92 Summer Jam is Saturday, featuring T-Pain, New Boyz, DJ Quik, The Rej3ctz. Show is 4-10pm, Tickets$20-40. Then on Thursday, August 4, Slightly Stoopid and Rebelution at 6:30pm, tickets are $30. Both shows are at The Gallivan Center.

Start working on your zombie costume, and plan to consume BRAAAIIINS Sunday, August 7. It’s the Fourth Annual Zombie walk. The route will be announced this weekend, so RSVP and be ready to march.

Pie ‘n’ Beer day! It’s time to eat well and drink spectacularly. Here’s a few ideas to get busy, that don’t involve rodeos and parades.

Get some laughs with John Hilder at Wiseguys Trolley Square. He’s performing Friday and Saturday night at 7:30pm, doors open at 6. Remember, they have a full menu there, so arrive for dinner beforehand.

The film classic Pee Wee’s Big Adventure is showing at Tower Theatre Friday and Saturday at 11pm, and Sunday at noon. Tickets are only $5, and this could be one of the few times you can see this on the big-screen. Ride your bike, but don’t let it get stolen.

Beer + food = happiness. What better way to learn the fine art of beer pairings then a 5-course meal with Squatters’ Brewmaster, Jenny Talley. Make your reservation now with Viking Cooking School for the event Wednesday, July 27 at 6pm. Price is $79, including beer pairing.

Wednesday night, an all-female AC/DC cover band is at Bar Deluxe. Hells Belles will be playing the classics at 8pm, tickets are $15.

Savor the Summit: Park City’s biggest dining room

For the last two years, I swore I would get up to Park City for Savor the Summit and things got in the way. This year, it was a necessity. Cool Park City air, the finest restaurants, and sharing the experience with 2000 others along a nearly mile-long row of tables. What’s not to love?

As great as Savor the Summit sounds, it’s even better in person. As the restaurants are setting up the massive grand table, there’s live music and a spirits garden to grab a drink. It’s a perfect evening to walk along Main Street to visit the art galleries and shops, and see each restaurant decoration theme. From western themed picnic tables, garden awnings, and beautiful posh lounges, each setting established a great mood for the dining experience to come.

I had the pleasure to dine at Easy Street, the luxurious steak and seafood grill at The Sky Lodge hotel. This was no basic dinner. The first course was a selection of “petite bruschettas and crostinis” which included a smoked salmon topped with pickled red onion and fried quail egg. Each was incredible, rich, and diverse in flavor. Next up, a grilled octopus salad with a sweet chili glaze. As someone who’s not always a fan of octopus, I was quite pleased with the perfectly cooked dish. The next course was a nice palate cleansing watermelon salad with arugula, goat cheese, and tarragon vinaigrette. The main course was rotisserie buffalo tri-tip with grilled potato, braised rainbow chard, and topped with a huckleberry demi-glace. I could have eaten that 100 more times.

 

Finally, dessert. White chocolate cheesecake with strawberries, and Remy Martin V.S.O.P. Wow! I know that’s not a technical term, but it was delicious. Absolutely heavenly. It was a perfect end to the evening, the atmosphere, the new friends, and a wonderful night in Park City. For anyone with concerns over dietary restrictions, don’t let that stop you from enjoying this event. Just let the restaurant know when you make your reservation. The chef at Easy Street prepared special dishes for one of the nearby diners, as she let them know she was gluten-intolerant. They really do work hard to make this is a great event.

Savor the Summit is an event you should not miss. Of all the dining events throughout Utah, this is the top. Plan ahead for next June. Menus range from $50-250, wine pairings available at most restaurants. It’s worth every cent for the food and experience. I’ll keep you posted when restaurants begin taking reservations for the event.
