Another weekend is upon us, and the eternal question of what to do. Whatever your interest, it’s happening somewhere in SLC. From fashion to comedy, theatre to music, drag to Geena Davis, here is this week’s edition of Around the SL,UT.

Think Salt Lake isn’t fashionable? Well, show up to Fashion Night Out at Gallivan Center tonight at 6pm for a New York style fashion show that will prove you wrong. Eight local retailers displaying works on a high-end runway show, live music, a local’s only designer ally, and a beauty bar.

Then tomorrow night, a different kind of fashion with Miss City Weekly’s Royal Revue at Bar Deluxe. Hosted by Miss City Weekly, Nikki James and Gorgeous Jared, it’s an evening of music, performances, and a hypnotist show with Jake Shannon. It’s a fundraiser for Cause for Paws Utah, so bring extra cash for great raffle prizes from Beehive Cheese, Utah College of Massage Therapy, CJ Fishburn of Cathedral Tattoo, Zu Audio, Lady Cakes,Le Belle Visage Spa, Patiri Photography, and more. Heading to the Downtown Farmers Market Saturday morning will not only get you a great selection of local produce, herbs, and other products, but also a taste of the arts. It’s Performing Arts Day at the Farmers Market (Pioneer Park). Hosted by Emmy-award-winning composer Kurt Bestor, performers from Ririe Woodbury Dance Company, Salt Lake Acting Company, University of Utah Modern Dance, TLC Trio, and Utah Symphony/Utah Opera will provide live outdoor performances, offering sneak previews of their upcoming show seasons. Show from 10am-1pm, market opens at 8pm.

If you need to laugh, Saturday night is the 3rd Annual Battle of the Improvs at The Grand Theatre. And…Go!, HiJinks, Improvables, Jesters Royale, Off the Wall, Quick Wits, Thrillionaires, and ToySoup will square off against each other in a number of games and performances. Show is 7:30pm, tickets are $15.

For more laughs, and a taste of mistery, head to Park City’s Egyptian Theatre for Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps. A great play combining a spy thriller with farcical comedy and ingenious theatrical invention, The 39 Steps is an engaging “Who-Done-It?” based on Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 film, the play features more than 140 characters brought to life by a cast of just four actors. Shows are Saturday 8pm, and Sunday 6pm. Tickets from $12-30.

Wednesday, September 28, get to know one of Hollywood’s most prolific actresses at An Evening with Geena Davis at Rose Wagner Center. Show begins 7pm, tickets are $50.

Free Night of Theater 2011

Enter today to win free theater tickets throughout Utah. Free Night Utah is a program to expose more people to the theatre, and hundreds of free tickets will be distributed through October. However, today is the day you need to enter to be a part of this event.

Sign up today at Now Playing Utah and make your selections of which performances you are interested in. Next week you’ll be notified if you’ve won free tickets. Even if you don’t win, most theatres will offer incentives and other free nights to everyone who has signed up.

How’s your social calendar? If there’s a single night open, let’s fix that immediately. You’re in the SL,UT, and you should live it up. Here’s a taste of this week’s events and things to do.

It’s that time again for Dine O’Round. Fixed price menus at over 40 downtown restaurants with $5 & $10 lunches, $15 & $30 dinners. Dine O’Round runs through October 1st. For a list of participating restaurants, click here.

Coinciding with Dine O’Round, several of the participating chefs will be in the 6th Annual Chef Showdown Saturday, September 17. The chef showdown takes place at the Downtown Farmers Market in Pioneer Park from 10am-1pm. At 10:30am, the chefs will be given the secret ingredient, and then it’s off to the market so they can pick out the rest of their menu. Come on down and check it out.

Experience the Classical Greek Theatre Festival at Red Butte Garden Saturday and Sunday mornings. This year’s production is Euripides’ Iphigenia In Tauris. Shows begin at 9am, tickets are $15. The festival also runs next weekend, September 24-25.

The Flaming Lips are in SLC at Saltair Saturday, September 17 at 8pm. Don’t miss out on this show.

Monday is the first show for L8D Comedy Night (pronounced “elated) at Brewvies. Featuring the City Weekly Arty Award winning Levi Rounds, Toy Soup, Jon Clark, Jason Harvey, and more. Show begins at 7pm, tickets are $5 at the door.

Tuesday is the night for the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia quiz at The Huddle. $200 cash prize on the line for the team who knows the most about the worst people on earth. $5 entry per player, get the details here.

Wednesday is the Great Salt Lake Chili Affair at Salt Palace 5:30pm. Get a taste of gourmet chilis while contributing to a great cause, this is a fundraiser for the Road Home. Admission is $42 for an individual, $300 for table of 8.

Thursday, get your sci-fi costume ready and support Clark Planetarium’s Distant Galaxy Gala. A great event with food, drinks, and entertainment.
