Around the SL,UT: Happy Thanksgiving 2011

November 24, 2011

It’s Thanksgiving, but you don’t have to stay home today. There are a few places that will invite you in with open arms to feed you and provide drinks. Here’s a special issue for Thanksgiving, with some better-than-Black Friday shopping ideas.

For a different kind of Thanksgiving meal, spend the day at Piper Down. $6 “heavenly spaghetti plates” while it lasts, and $3.50 Turkey & Red Bull shots. In the evening, DJ Jello is spinning old school/retro/dance music while they have free jello shots $3 cake martinis, and they’ll be giving away diamonds to a lucky lady.

If you’re looking for a late-night escape after dinner with the family, check out Area 51’s legendary 80s party. The doors open at 9pm for this night of dressing and partying like the decade of John Hughes, new wave, and A Flock of Seagulls.

Is there anything you really need from those phony Black Friday sales? Of course not. So rather than lining up at those super-stores to buy completely forgettable gifts, why not make a commitment to shop local and buy something decent this year. Show those people you love that you actually thought about the gift rather than buying something they’ll just throw away.

Give the gift of film and buy your loved ones a membership to Salt Lake Film Society. They bring us some of the best independent film from around the world, and provide entertainment that we would otherwise never hear of. Memberships start at $50 per year, and provide many benefits like discounts, special screenings, free Tower Theatre video rentals and more.

Have a music lover on your shopping list? Graywhale will have exclusive Record Store Day releases from The Beastie Boys, The Beatles, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Wilco, and more. Head over to Slowtrain for great liquidation deals as well.

Salt City Brew Supply has a great gift this weekend for the curious brewer. They are selling a $75 starter beer kit that includes equipment and ingredients for the first-time brewer. Check their store out at 750 east Ft. Union.

Keep an eye here throughout December for more gift ideas, as well as things to do throughout the holiday season. Got an idea or event you want to share? Pass it on. Leave a comment or email to askjesus@wwjdinslc.com.
