There’s a vicious rumor that I’m kicking off the end of the world Saturday, if you’re reading this on Sunday, it’s proof that the crazies are wrong again. There’s just too much left to do, can’t be bothered with that whole judgement day stuff. The only thing I want to judge, the best drinks and things to do in the SL,UT.

The Living Traditions Festival is a celebration of authentic and traditional folk and ethnic arts. This festival brings people together to honor the diversity and cultural traditions of our community. Local ethnic artists, craftspeople, dancers, musicians and chefs will be exhibiting. Best of all, no admission for the festival. Brave the weather and enjoy this great event Friday from 5-10pm, Saturday noon-10pm, Sunday noon-7pm. Takes place at Washington Square (City Hall 400s State Street). See the complete schedule here.

Saturday is also the Urban Arts Festival. Come see urban, artistic culture in a one day event benefiting YouthCity and Skate 4 Homies foundations. Enjoy live performances by local musicians, dancers, skateboarders, and more. Shop in the Pierpont shops or stroll the artist booths for fanstastic finds unique to Salt Lake City. You will have an opportunity to create your very own, one-of-a-kind decorated skate deck! The decks will be entered in a competition to be hung in Gray Wall Gallery. They will be voted on in the gallery and be eligible for a chance at winning many great prizes donated by local businesses. The Urban Arts Festival happens Saturday from 10am-9pm on Pierpont Ave (240s) between 300-400 west.

The newest installment to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise just opened, and Saturday is Area 51’s Pirates Ball. Come dressed in your best buccaneer gear for great drink specials, dancing, and prizes for best costumes from 9pm-2am.

DON’T PANIC! Wednesday, May 25 is Towel Day. The day to celebrate Douglas Adams, the author of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. What better way to celebrate one of the greatest pieces of geek-fiction than at the biggest and best geek-culture event in Salt Lake, Geeks Who Drink at Piper Down. Don’t worry, you don’t need to be a uber-nerd to have a good time, it’s general, pop-culture, and random knowledge questions that everyone has a chance to win. First question at 7:30pm, arrive early, and bring your towel.

The temperature is heating up, and Salt Lake is overflowing with things to do this week. The Renaissance Fest & Fantasy Faire is still going on up north, UrineTown playing at The Grand, and then we’ve got some more highlights below.

Our Real Salt Lake are in action Saturday night. Come see the hottest team in U.S. soccer as they take on Houston Dynamo at 7pm. Tickets start at $25 day of the game. Here’s a great idea, start your night at Lucky 13 to enjoy $3 PBR and $3 Sauza Tequila, and great burgers with house-smoked bacon. Then catch TRAX down to Sandy for the game.

Want to be in a music video for one of my favorite bands? Paul Jacobsen & the Madison Arm are filming a music video at Piper Down on Tuesday, May 17. Head over to Piper Down and settle in for a great dinner, $3 steins, and be a part of this great moment in music.

Who doesn’t love Bill Murray? Geeks Who Drink is celebrating the career of this funny man with a special themed quiz Tuesday, May 17. $5 entry per player qualifies you and your teammates for a $200+ cash prize if your Peter Venkman knowledge tops the rest of the crowd. Get up to 6 players for your team, and be at The Huddle before 8pm with cash in hand. Great food, $3 Shiner Bock steins, and a great time full of laughs as I host a quiz from SNL and Caddyshack to Fantastic Mr. Fox and beyond. Arrive early for best seats. Several great prizes throughout the night.

Going local isn’t a fad or a buzzword, it’s a strategy to repair our fractured world. This is the premise of The Economics of Happiness, a new film that examines how local economics are improving our lives. It will show at Brewvies, Thursday, May 19 at 7pm. Tickets are $6 Q&A afterward with locals who are helping to drive this movement.
